Northern Lights in Tromsø Norway

Which Area to Stay in Tromsø

Although Tromsø is a relatively small city, it’s the largest and most vibrant hub in Northern Norway, with several distinct areas—each offering their own unique charm and advantages. Whether you’re looking to stay in the heart of the city surrounded by restaurants and nightlife, prefer a quieter, scenic spot with views of the fjords, or want easy access to outdoor adventures, there’s a perfect area in Tromsø to match your travel style. We will explore the three main areas to help you find the best place for you.

Downtown Tromsø (City Center)

The city center is the heart of Tromsø, brimming with cozy cafés, buzzing bars, boutique shops, fascinating museums, and some of the city’s best restaurants. It puts you just steps from major attractions like the Polar Museum, the harborfront, and the starting points for northern lights tours and fjord cruises. This area is ideal for first-time visitors who want to soak up Tromsø’s unique blend of Arctic charm and urban energy. With everything within easy walking distance, staying here also gives you maximum flexibility—no rental car needed to enjoy the best of what the city has to offer.

Tromsdalen

Located just across the Tromsø Bridge, Tromsdalen offers a peaceful, scenic alternative to the busy city center. It’s home to the famous Arctic Cathedral and the base station for the Fjellheisen cable car, which takes you up Mount Storsteinen for jaw-dropping views over the city and surrounding fjords. This area is great for travelers who want easy access to hikes and outdoor adventures, while still being just a short bus ride or walk from downtown.

Kvaløya

Kvaløya (or “Whale Island”) is one of the largest islands in Norway and is ideal for those looking to explore the wild side of Tromsø. It’s a haven for hiking, skiing, and wildlife spotting—especially reindeer and, in the right season, whales. Accommodation here is more spread out, with cozy cabins and rustic lodges tucked into the landscape—but its low light pollution makes it one of the best spots around Tromsø for catching a clear view of the northern lights.

Keep in mind that since this area is a bit of a drive from Tromsø’s city center, dining options are more limited and often spread out. For that reason, it’s a good idea to book accommodation with a kitchen or kitchenette, so you can prepare your own meals and enjoy the flexibility of dining in—especially after a day of exploring or chasing the northern lights. This is what we did, and it gave us so much flexibility!

The Best Stays in Each Area

Downtown Tromsø

If you choose to stay in Tromsø’s city center, the Harbor area is an especially appealing choice. This picturesque part of town offers some of the city’s best hotels, many of which boast stunning views of the waterfront, surrounding mountains, and Arctic sky. Whether you’re looking for luxurious comfort or a more budget-friendly stay, here are some of our recommendations to suit a range of travel styles and budgets.

Clarion Hotel The Edge

While Tromsø doesn’t officially have any 5-star hotels, the Clarion Hotel The Edge delivers a luxury experience that’s hard to beat. As one of the city’s newest and largest properties, it’s a top choice for travelers seeking comfort, style, and convenience. Located right on the waterfront, the hotel offers stunning panoramic views of the harbor, mountains, and Arctic sky—many rooms even have floor-to-ceiling windows to take full advantage of the scenery.

We love the hotel’s modern design, well-appointed rooms, and top-tier amenities, including a fully equipped fitness center and an award-winning restaurant serving up seasonal Nordic cuisine. But the real showstopper is Skybar, Tromsø’s only rooftop bar, perched on the 11th floor. It’s the perfect place to unwind with a drink and watch the northern lights dance over the city or take in the midnight sun in summer. Plus, with its central location, you’re just steps from Tromsø’s best restaurants, shops, and tour meeting points—making it an ideal base for exploring the city.

Scandic Ishavshotel

For another luxurious stay right on the waterfront, Scandic Ishavshotel is one of Tromsø’s most iconic options. Designed to resemble a docked ship, the hotel stretches out into the harbor, offering guests uninterrupted views of the Tromsø Bridge, the Arctic Cathedral, and the surrounding fjords. Thanks to its unique architecture, nearly every room features floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking Arctic scenery—making it one of the best spots in the city to watch the northern lights or the soft glow of the midnight sun from the comfort of your room.

While it may not have a rooftop bar like the Clarion, Scandic Ishavshotel more than makes up for it with its highly praised breakfast buffet—often called the “best breakfast in Norway.” With a spread that includes fresh-baked bread, local cheeses, smoked salmon, and warm Nordic dishes, it’s a true highlight of the stay (especially in a city known for its incredible food scene).

Although the hotel is well-suited for all types of travelers, its romantic views, serene atmosphere, and elegant rooms make it a top pick for couples seeking a cozy, intimate Arctic escape.

Quality Hotel Saga

Quality Hotel Saga is a wonderful mid-range choice for travelers who want comfort, convenience, and excellent value—all while staying in the heart of downtown Tromsø. Located just across from Tromsø Cathedral and a short stroll from the harbor, museums, and shopping streets, this hotel places you right in the middle of the action without the premium price tag.

The rooms are modern, spacious, and thoughtfully designed, many of them offering beautiful views of the city, surrounding mountains, or even glimpses of the northern lights in winter. The hotel also includes a generous complimentary breakfast, with a variety of local and international offerings to start your day right.

Another perk? Quality Hotel Saga is known for its warm hospitality and welcoming atmosphere, making it a favorite among both business travelers and vacationers. It’s especially ideal for families who want a reliable and comfortable base while exploring everything Tromsø has to offer.

Comfort Hotel

For travelers looking to experience Tromsø’s city center without breaking the bank, Comfort Hotel Xpress Tromsø is a fantastic budget-friendly choice. While the rooms are more minimalistic compared to some of the city’s luxury options, the hotel delivers where it matters—modern design, clean and comfortable spaces, and an unbeatable location right in the heart of the city.

Just steps from Tromsø Cathedral and surrounded by shops, cafés, and restaurants, the hotel puts you within walking distance of almost everything—including pickup points for northern lights tours and the harbor-front. Plus, it’s only a 10-minute drive from the airport, making arrival and departure a breeze.

This hotel is especially ideal for solo travelers, couples, or digital nomads who value convenience, style, and a central location, but plan to spend most of their time out exploring rather than lounging in the room.

Tromsø Harbor Views

Tromsdalen

If you think you would rather stay in Tromsdalen, here are a few accommodations that prioritize beautiful views, quick access to outdoor attractions, and generally lower accommodation prices.

Tromsø Lodge & Camping

Tromsø Lodge & Camping offers a cozy, cabin-style stay that’s a great alternative to a traditional hotel. Set along the Tromsdalselva River, it’s a peaceful base with easy access to hiking trails, the Fjellheisen cable car, and downtown Tromsø—just a short drive or quick bus ride away. In winter, the surroundings are especially quiet and scenic, with snow-covered trees and the chance to catch the northern lights right from your doorstep!

We highly recommend Tromsø Lodge for couples looking for a romantic getaway or small families seeking a unique base for Arctic adventures. Whether you’re sipping hot chocolate by the fire or heading out for a day of dog sledding, this stay adds a magical touch to your Northern Norway itinerary.

Villa Havblikk Hotel

Villa Havblikk is another gem in Tromsdalen—and arguably the most charming stay on this list. This boutique hotel, originally built in 1917, is a beautifully preserved example of a classic Norwegian wooden villa. With its timeless architecture and cozy atmosphere, it offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort.

What truly sets Villa Havblikk apart, though, are the views. Perched just above the shoreline, it’s one of the few accommodations in Tromsdalen that offers stunning, unobstructed vistas of Tromsø city center across the water—especially magical at sunrise or when the city lights start to glow.

Another major perk? It’s just a short walk to the Fjellheisen cable car, which takes you up to the top of Mount Storsteinen for panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and mountains.

We recommend this stay for solo travelers looking to treat themselves or couples seeking a romantic, atmospheric escape. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, savor the view, and soak up every moment of your Arctic adventure.

Kvaløya

If you’re aiming for a more adventurous or remote escape during your Norway getaway,  Kvaløya is your spot. Here are a few of our top picks!

Steam Pier

Steam Pier feels like something out of a dream. These luxury apartments offer the best of both worlds—secluded enough for peace and quiet, yet close enough to town for convenience.

Relax in a hot tub with a front-row view of the fjords, then curl up in bed behind floor-to-ceiling windows as the northern lights dance above. Whether you’re a couple or a group, this spot provides the ultimate escape.

The Crush

The Crush Hotel is a rare budget-friendly gem that doesn’t feel like a compromise. It’s cozy, comfortable, and perfectly located for just about any outdoor adventure—whether you’re into hiking, skiing, or even hitting the beach.

With a full-service kitchen in every unit, it’s a great fit for solo travelers and small families who want flexibility without the high price tag. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming—more like a home base than a hotel, and exactly the kind of place you’ll want to come back to after a day out exploring.
